Newsletter #4 – February 2025

RTL News

After a busy January, Right to Love has been taking a bit of a breather from writing in February. We have instead been working on growing our volunteer base and collaboration efforts.

It seems to be a slow month in wider news too.

We look forward to bringing you more content next month.

Professional Spotlight – Salvador Minuchin

Picture of Salvador Minuchin

Salvador Minuchin was a family therapist from Argentina. He developed structural family therapy to help parents resolve relationship problems in their family.

He trained as a child psychiatrist in New York and founded what became the Minuchin Centre for the Family which trains therapists worldwide to support families.

Minuchin worked with families with significant dysfunction where enmeshment, emotional cutoff are a factor to help family members to take responsibility for their actions, change behaviours, overcome conflict to develop better relationships and get better outcomes for children.

There is debate, but no solid research as yet, as to whether family systems is suitable for certain cases of domestic abuse. Dr Craig Children maintains it is vital in the effective treatment of child psychological abuse to help develop better relationships between children at risk of rejecting a good-enough parent. In later stages, it is helpful for reintroducing a previously abusive parent back into the family dynamic where possible.

Right to Love – Key Links

RTL raises awareness of child/partner psychological abuse in the context of parental separation. Our leaflet provides a brief overview of this issue for busy professionals and families.

Some refer to “parental alienation” but we have outlined Why Right to Love Doesn’t Use the Term as we believe it is unnecessarily leading to difficulties securing mental health solutions. Instead we support the diagnostic model used by Dr Craig Childress to identify cases of child psychological abuse.
